"Stroke", "brain attack", and "ischemic attack" are interchangeable terms used for an interruption of the blood supply to the brain.
Warning signs are:
1. Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
2. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
3. Sudden vision difficulty in one or both eyes.
4. Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
5. Sudden severe headache, with no known cause.
CIS Biotech, Inc. has developed laboratory tests for the early detection of stroke and, in collaboration with DeKalb Medical Center (Decatur, Georgia, USA), is making its "home brew" in-house assays available for screening people with conditions that place them at a higher risk for stroke, such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
These tests are among the first that can predict acute neurological events outside of a research setting. The fee per test is expected to be between $75 and $95. In addition to being affordable, it is fast and minimally invasive, requiring only a finger prick. People with abnormal biomarker levels will be urged to visit their physicians for further testing to determine their risk for stroke.
